What the Messenger of Allah has made unlawful is the same as what Allah has made unlawful

Al-Miqdām ibn Ma‘di Karib said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Lo! Soon a Hadith from me will be conveyed to a man, while he is reclining on his couch, and he says: ‘Between us and you is Allah’s Book. So whatever we find in it that is lawful, we consider lawful, and whatever we find in it that is unlawful, we consider it unlawful.’ Indeed whatever the Messenger of Allah made unlawful, it is the same as what Allah made unlawful.’”

Sahih/Authentic. [Ibn Maajah]

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) is telling about a type of people who do not pay due respect to his Hadīth, and some of them do not believe or even cherish that his Sunnah can be used as supportive proof of a given issue. A Hadīth of the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) would be conveyed to one of them as he is reclining upon his sofa, so he rejects it and says: “What is between us and you is the Qur’an, whatever we find in it lawful, we consider lawful, and whatever we find in it unlawful, we consider it unlawful.” He does not act upon or believe in the Hadīths that he hears, considering the Qur’an to be the only source of legislation. In fact, were he to act upon the Qur’an, he would adhere to the Sunnah, since the Qur’an commands Muslims to obey the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). Moreover, the Sunnah was conveyed to us by those who conveyed the Qur’an. In addition, the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) told us that what is made unlawful by Allah is the same as what is made unlawful by His Messenger (may Allah’ peace and blessings be upon him), since he is the one who conveys the message of His Lord, and he does not speak out of his own inclination.

It urges holding the Hadīth of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) in great esteem and respecting his commands and prohibitions. Doing this is part of holding the Qur’an in great esteem. What the Messenger of Allah (may Al
