2161 قل: لا إله إلا الله، أشهد لك بها يوم القيامة
Say "there is no god but Allah", and I will testify for you by it on the Day of Judgment

عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعمه: "قل: لا إله إلا الله، أشهد لك بها يوم القيامة"، قال: لولا أن تُعَيِّرَني قريش، يقولون: إنما حمله على ذلك الجزع لأقررتُ بها عينك. فأنزل الله: {إنك لا تهدي من أحببت ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء} [القصص: 56].

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said to his uncle: "Say 'there is no god but Allah', and I will testify for you by it on the Day of Judgment." He said: "Were it not the fear that the Quraysh may blame me and say that it was the fear (from imminent death) that induced me to do so, I would have certainly delighted your eyes with it." So, Allah revealed: {You cannot guide whoever you like, but Allah guides whom He wills.} [Surat al-Qasas: 56]

طلب النبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مِن عمِّه أبي طالب وهو في سكرات الموت أن ينطق بالشَّهادة؛ ليشْفَع له بها يوم القيامة، ويشهد له بالإسلام، فأبى أن ينطق بالشَّهادة؛ خوفًا مِن أن تَسُبَّه قريش، وتقول عنه: إنَّه أسلَم بسبب الخوف مِن الموت والضَّعْف، فما منَعَه مِن الدُّخول في الإسلام إلّا خوفه ممّا تقوله قريش عنه، وقال للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: لولا ذلك لَأدخلت السّرور على قلبك بقول الشَّهادة، وأبلغتك أُمنيتك حتى ترضى، فأنزل الله تعالى الآية التي تدل على أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لا يملك هداية التوفيق والإلهام، وإن كان عليه الصلاة والسلام يهدي الخلق بالدلالة والبيان والإرشاد والدعوة إلى الصراط المستقيم، والله عز وجل وحده هو مَن يخلق في قلوبهم الإيمان ويُوفِّقهم للعمل به.
The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) asked his uncle Abu Tālib, while in the throes of death, to utter the testimony of faith, so that he could intercede for him with it on the Day of Judgment and testify that he was a Muslim. But he refused to utter it, fearing that the Quraysh would revile him and say that he embraced Islam out of fear from death and weakness. So, nothing prevented him from entering Islam but the fear from what the Quraysh would say about him. He said to the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him): Were it not for that, I would have made you joyful by saying the testimony and fulfill your wish. So, Allah Almighty revealed a verse proclaiming that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) had no power to guide people in the sense of inspiring them to accept Islam, though he guided them by clarifying, showing, and calling them to the straight path. Yet, it is Allah Almighty alone Who can put faith into their hearts and guide them to act upon it.

لا يملك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلاح قلب أحد ولا توفيقه للإيمان، ولا أحد من الخلق، فالقادر على ذلك هو الله وحده. بيان سبب نزول الآية. بيان أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يشفع يوم القيامة للمسلمين. الدين أعظم ما يملكه الإنسان فلا يضيعه خوفًا من أقوال الآخرين. أن الهدى من الله تعالى، فلا يطلب إلا منه، سواء طلبه الإنسان لنفسه أو لغيره.
