that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not ever leave praying four Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr and two Rak‘ahs before Fajr

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان لا يَدع أربعا قَبل الظهر وركعتين قبل الغَدَاة.

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not ever leave praying four Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr and two Rak‘ahs before Fajr.

أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يُداوم ويحافظ على صلاة أربع ركعات قبل صلاة الظهر، وهذا لا ينافي حديث ابن عمر رضي الله عنه وفيه: "ركعتين قبل الظهر"، ووجه الجمع بينهما أنه تارةً يصلي ركعتين، وتارةً أربعًا، فأخبر كل منهما عن أحد الأمرين، وهذا موجود في كثير من نوافل العبادات. ويصلي أربعًا قبل الظهر بتسليمتين، وإن صلاها أربعًا بتسليمة واحدة جاز. كما كان يُداوم ويحافظ على صلاة ركعتين قبل صلاة الفجر، وهي الغداة.
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) always used to pray four voluntary Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr prayer, and this does not negate or contradict Ibn ‘Umar's Hadīth that reads: "two Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr". In order to compromise these different two narrations is; that sometimes he would pray two, and sometimes four, and each companion informed either of the cases from the Prophet. This is permissible in many of the voluntary acts of worship. He used to either pray four Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr with two Taslīms, or pray four Rak‘ahs with one Taslīm.

المحافظة على أربع ركعات قبل صلاة الظهر، وركعتين بعد طلوع الفجر. أن الرَّواتب تصلى في البيت، ولولا ذلك ما أخبرت به عائشة -رضي الله عنها-.
