1517 لا تقولوا للمُنَافق سَيِّدٌ، فإنه إن يَكُ سَيِّدًا فقد أسْخَطْتُمْ ربكم عز وجل
Do not call a hypocrite a master, for if he is a master, you will have angered your Almighty Lord

عن بُريدة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : «لا تقولوا للمُنَافق سَيِّدٌ، فإنه إن يَكُ سَيِّدًا فقد أسْخَطْتُمْ ربكم عز وجل ».

Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not call a hypocrite a master, for if he is a master, you will have angered your Almighty Lord."

معنى الحديث أن المنافق إن كان سيدًا كبيرًا في قومه وأطلقتم عليه لقب: سيد، فقد أسخطتم الله؛ لأنه يكون تعظيمًا له، وهو ممن لا يستحق التعظيم، وإن لم يكن سيدًا في قومه أو كبيرًا في قومه، فإنه يكون كذبًا ونفاقًا، ففي الحالين ينهى عن إطلاق لفظ السيد على المنافق، ومثله الكافر والفاسق والمبتدع، فهو لا يستحق وصف السِّيادة مطلقًا، وهذا النهي عام للصحابة ومن بعدهم، وقد كان المنافقون في عهدهم على قسمين، الأول: منافقون لا يعلمهم إلا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وصاحب السر وهو حذيفة رضي الله عنه ، والثاني: منافقون عرف الصحابة نفاقهم، كعبد الله بن أبي، وهذا ينطبق عليه الحديث.
Meaning of the Hadīth: If a hypocrite is a master among his people and you call him as such, you will incur the wrath of Allah, as you revere that hypocrite who does not deserve such treatment; and if he is not a master or leader, you will be lying and flattering. So, in both cases, he forbids us from addressing a hypocrite as master, with the same applying to a disbeliever, a defiantly disobedient Muslim, or a heretic, for they do not deserve this title at all. The prohibition was addressed to the Companions and those who came after them. Hypocrites at the time were of two types: First: Hypocrites known only to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his confidant Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Second: Hypocrites known among the Companions for their hypocrisy, such as ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy. Those fall under the ruling stated in the Hadīth.

تحريم وصف المنافق بأوصاف الاحترام والتقدير، وأن وصفه بذلك يستدعي غضب الله -عز وجل-؛ لأنه تعظيم لعدوِّه الخارج عن طاعته المستحق للإهانة والتحقير. يلحق بالمنافق: الفاسق والكافر والمبتدع. لا يستحق الاحترام والتقدير إلا من تواضع لله -تعالى- بطاعته، والتزام حدوده. ينبغي على المجتمع المسلم ألا يجعل للمنافقين ثَغرة يلجؤون منها لتوجيه شؤون المسلمين، بل ينبغي إذلالهم؛ لأنهم خالفوا أمر الله ورسوله. جواز تَسْييد غير المنافق، إن كان أهلاً لذلك، كالعلماء وأهل الفضل.
