We were forbidden from adopting the attitude of affectation

‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were forbidden from adopting the attitude of affectation.

Sahih/Authentic. [Al-Bukhari]

Any statement by a Companion denoting prohibition, the prohibition therein is attributed to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). In this case, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that they were forbidden, i.e. the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them, from adopting the attitude of affectation. Affectation here refers to any statement or action that is not natural and that is intended to impress others. Affectation in statements is, for example, by asking too many questions and searching for obscure things that should not be looked for, instead of following and accepting the explicit commands of Shariah. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: "We were with ‘Umar and he was wearing a garment that had four patches. He recited from the Qur'an: {fruits and abba} [Sūrat ‘Abas: 31]. He remarked that he knew ''fruits'' and wondered what ''abba'' means. However, he said: "We were forbidden from adopting the attitude of affectation." Affectation in actions is when one overburdens himself by trying, for example, to entertain his guest beyond his financial means. One might even take a loan that he cannot later settle, thereby doing himself harm in life and in the Hereafter. Hence, the Muslim should not be pretentious, rather he should take a moderate approach to all things following the example of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who neither withheld something available, nor pretended to have something unavailable.

We are prohibited from affectation and urged to keep away from it in everything.
