If anyone abandons the ‘Asr prayer, their deeds will be rendered null and void

عن بريدة بن الحصيب رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : «من تَرَكَ صلاةَ العصرِ فقد حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ».

Buraydah ibn al-Husayb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If anyone abandons the ‘Asr prayer, their deeds will be rendered null and void."

أفاد الحديث عقوبة من ترك صلاة العصر متعمداً، وخص العصر لأنها مظنة التأخير بالتعب من شغل النهار؛ ولأن فوتها أقبح من فوت غيرها؛ لكونها الصلاة الوسطى المخصوصة بالأمر بالمحافظة عليها في قوله تعالى : (حافظوا على الصلوات والصلاة الوسطى) [البقرة: 238]، والعقوبة المترتبة على ذلك حبوط عمل من تركها، ببطلان ثوابه، وقيل: المراد مَنْ تركها مستحلاً لذلك، أو جاحداً لوجوبها، فيكون المراد بحبوط العمل الكفر، واستدل بهذا بعض العلماء على أن من ترك صلاة العصر كفر؛ لأنه لا يحبط الأعمال إلا الردة، وقيل: هو وارد على سبيل التغليظ؛ أي: من تركها فكأنما حبط عمله، وهذا من فضائل صلاة العصر خاصة أن من تركها فقد حبط عمله؛ لأنها عظيمة.
This Hadīth shows the punishment of missing the ‘Asr prayer intentionally. It specified the ‘Asr prayer as people often delay this prayer due to feeling tired after work. Missing this prayer is much worse than missing any other prayer, because it is the middle prayer that Allah specified and ordered to be maintained in His saying: {Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer} [Sūrat al-Baqarah: 238]. The consequence of missing it is that one's deeds are nullified and their reward abolished. Another interpretation suggests that this punishment applies only to those who miss it deeming this to be permissible or denying that the prayer is compulsory. In this sense, nullifying one's deeds refers to disbelief. Some scholars use this Hadīth as evidence to show that if anyone misses the ‘Asr prayer intentionally they have apostatized, as nothing nullifies good deeds except apostasy. A third interpretation suggests that the warning here is intended to put additional emphasis on the gravity of such a sin, so the meaning is: if someone deliberately misses the ‘Asr prayer, it will be as if their deeds are nullified. This Hadīth shows the great virtue of the ‘Asr prayer and the significance of missing it.
