عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى قال: «لقيني كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ فقال: ألا أُهْدِي لك هدية؟ إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم خرج علينا، فقلنا: يا رسول الله، قد عَلِمْنا الله كيف نُسَلِّمُ عليك؛ فكَيف نُصَلِّي عليك؟ فقال: قولوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ على محمد وعلى آل محمد؛ كما صَلَّيْتَ على إبراهيم، إنَّك حميد مجيد، وبَارِكْ على محمد وعلى آل محمد؛ كما باركت على إبراهيم، إنَّك حميد مجيد». ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn Abu Layla reported: I came across Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah, who said: "Shall I offer you a present? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and we said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have learned how to greet you, but how should we invoke the grace of Allah upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, bestow Your grace upon Muhammad and his family just as You bestowed Your grace upon Ibrahīm and his family. Verily, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and his family just as You blessed Ibrahīm and his family. Verily, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.'"
